Part I: Project Description
This past year, we were made aware that the layout of our standardized tests was going to change to become more of a writing element within mathematics. Therefore, with the future of standardize tests changing quickly, it is important for my students to have a deeper understanding of mathematics. They will need to know how to express their ideas in words, and write their reasoning behind their process to get to their conclusion of the questions asked.
As eleventh graders, my algebra 2 students are still working on the in's and out's of writing, but the more practice they have, the better they will get! Even as eleventh graders, after they have already had algebra 1 their ninth grade year, they still seem to struggle with the understanding of quadratics and factoring. Therefore, for my DreamIt project, I will focus on students understanding of quadratic and factoring and being able to write out their reasoning behinds the processes they take to solve such problems. I want my students to be able to relate such concepts of mathematics to real world context and be able to clearly articulate their thinking processes.

I want my algebra students to be able to verbalize their thinking and the process they use to solve quadratic and factoring problems both in classroom context and real world context. I want them to not only have a computational understanding, but I want them to have a conceptual mathematical understanding of quadratics and why they are doing what they are doing.
Throughout this process, I would like to have my students be comfortable with explaining their thought process of ‘why’ they have take the process they have chosen, rather than just ‘show me’ the work.
Throughout this process, I would like to have my students be comfortable with explaining their thought process of ‘why’ they have take the process they have chosen, rather than just ‘show me’ the work.
The technologies I will use to facilitate this will be a basic paper and pencil, for them to demonstrate their thought process through writing. I will use a rubric created on http://rubistar.4teachers.org/index.php, to help the students understand what I will be looking for and what they will be looking for within each other’s work, when we are evaluating. An iPad and Promethean board will be used throughout the process during evaluations, gallery walks, observations, etc.
